Before real estate, I spent years working in kitchens during and after college — from a pizzeria to a Korean restaurant that sparked my obsession with kimchi, bulgogi, and spicy food with enough heat to make you pay attention, to an upscale Italian restaurant where I learned to appreciate how much detail goes into doing simple things well. Simplicity, when done right, is rarely simple at all.
Around that time, chef, author, and television host Anthony Bourdain became a major influence on me. Kitchen Confidential, Appetites, and A Cook’s Tour were some of my favorites — and for a while I seriously considered attending the Culinary Institute of America before life took me in a different direction.
That background gave me a lasting appreciation for food, service, cultures, and hospitality. At home, I still love cooking — smoking barbecue on my Kamado Joe, making homemade pasta, and working on things like beef tallow and broth from scratch. During football season, you will find me making Chicago-style Italian beef sandwiches, wet, with plenty of giardiniera. I enjoy everything from a Michelin-starred tasting menu to tacos from a food truck. To me, both can be great for completely different reasons.
So when people ask me where to eat in Sioux Falls, I do not give that question a lazy answer. I think about the places with heart. The places that get the details right. The places locals return to because they are worth returning to. Here are my favorites.
